eFoil Lessons in Miami: Everything You Need to Know

eFoil Lessons in Miami: Everything You Need to Know

The first time you lift off the water on an eFoil, everything goes quiet. The splashing stops, the hum of the motor fades, and for a moment you're just floating above the bay. Miami is one of the best places in the world to experience that for the first time. Warm water, a flat protected bay, and a year-round season that means you can book any month without gambling on the weather.

What Is an eFoil?

An eFoil is an electric hydrofoil surfboard. Beneath the board is a mast and foil wing that lifts the board and you above the water's surface as you gain speed. The motor is fully electric, near-silent, and powered by a rechargeable battery. No waves required, no wind required, no engine noise. You control speed with a handheld wireless controller, and the whole system is designed to be ridden by people with zero prior board experience. If you can ride a bike, you can eFoil.

What Happens in an eFoil Lesson?

Your lesson starts on land. Your instructor will walk you through the safety basics, most importantly, how to fall: jump away from the board, not onto it. From there you'll learn how to arm the controller, start the motor, and control your speed before you ever touch the water.

In the water, you'll start on your knees. This is deliberate. Getting comfortable with the board's response and the controller before adding the complexity of standing. As you slowly increase speed you'll feel the foil begin to engage beneath you. The first time you lift off on foil, weight forward is your best friend: hands in front keeps the board on the surface of the water and gives you stability.

Once you're comfortable on your knees, your instructor will have you move to a crouched position with one foot forward. This gets your feet into the right place before you fully stand. Foot placement matters: decide on land whether you're regular (left foot forward) or goofy (right foot forward). As you rise, keep your hands forward and take your time. There's no hurry. When you're on your feet and comfortable, shift your weight back to engage the foil, then immediately bring it forward to put the board back on the surface. Practice that lift-off and touchdown technique and full control follows quickly.

Most sessions run 90 minutes with around an hour on the water.

How Long Does It Take to Learn?

Most beginners are standing and riding within their first session. Actual foiling, or lifting fully above the water's surface, typically happens within the first session for many riders. It is genuinely one of the faster-learning board sports, and the Fliteboard's built-in safety features (more on those below) mean there's less anxiety getting started.

If you're a snowboarder, skier, kitesurfer, wakeboarder, or anyone with existing board sport balance, expect to progress faster than average. If you've never stood on a board in your life, relax. The learning curve is shorter than it looks from the outside.

What to Wear and Bring

Board shorts or a surf bikini are all you need. A rash guard is recommended for sun protection but not required. Bring reef-safe sunscreen because Florida's reef deserves the consideration. Helmets and life jackets are provided for every session, no need to bring your own. Water shoes are optional. Leave your phone on the dock.

No prior experience is required for anything.

eFoil Lesson Pricing in Miami

AOA Marine offers Fliteboard eFoil lessons at Miami Beach Marina. Pricing starts at $450 for a group intro session and $250 for a private 60-minute session. Visit the booking page for current availability and package options.

The board you learn on matters more than most people realize. AOA teaches exclusively on Fliteboards, the premium end of the eFoil market. Budget operators in Miami use entry-level brands that handle differently and don't have the same safety systems. A Fliteboard's tilt detection automatically shuts down the motor if the board tips beyond a safe angle, a feature worth learning on. When you're trying eFoiling for the first time, the equipment should be the last thing you're worried about.

Where Are Lessons Held?

AOA Marine operates from Miami Beach Marina at 300 Alton Rd, Miami Beach. Sessions run on Biscayne Bay, a flat, protected, and warm year-round. The bay's conditions are close to ideal for learning: minimal chop, no surf break, and enough open water that you're not navigating traffic during your first session. Dolphins are an occasional bonus.

AOA also offers lessons from the dock at The Standard Hotel on Lido Island for guests staying there. And if you'd rather not come to us, we come to you. Private lessons can be arranged directly from your yacht or private dock anywhere on Biscayne Bay. Parking is available at the marina.

Is eFoiling Safe?

It is, and here's specifically why. The Fliteboard's electric motor cuts out automatically if the board tilts, so a fall doesn't mean the motor keeps running. The foil wing is beneath the board, not exposed on the surface. Life jackets and helmets are provided and required for every session. Your instructor is in the water with you throughout, not watching from shore.

Falls happen, especially in the first session. They're low-impact: you're going slowly on flat water, not wiping out in surf. The standard advice is to jump away from the board when you fall, and your instructor will cover this in the land briefing before you touch the water. The question isn't whether you'll fall - you will - it's whether that bothers you. For most people, after the first one, it doesn't.
